How to Choose a Coach

How to Choose the Right Productivity Coach

If you’re wondering how to choose a productivity coach, start with how you feel when you talk with them. Do you feel connected? Do you feel comfortable enough to let this person help you? Credentials and experience matter, but so does how a coach thinks, listens, challenges, and works with you.

Connection matters, but so does the way you want to be coached. Some people are most successful with a proven roadmap or structured program. On the other hand, there are those of us who must forge our own paths, in our own ways. This is the type of client who tends to benefit most from my style of coaching.

You bring the goals, questions, and challenges. I provide a safe, thoughtful space to help you organize your thoughts, consider options, make decisions, and turn insight into action.

Many Hats

A productivity coach helps you understand how you work best and create practical systems, priorities, and habits that help you get important work done.

A business coach helps you think through the bigger picture — decisions, opportunities, challenges, and what will best support your business and your life.

A leadership coach helps you lead more effectively by strengthening communication, decision-making, delegation, accountability, and the conditions that allow people to do their best work.

Sometimes a consultant is what you need. When my experience or expertise can shorten your learning curve, I’ll share what I know rather than making you figure everything out for yourself.

And sometimes you need an organizer’s brain. I bring decades of experience turning complexity into clear priorities, practical processes, and an actionable path forward.

When we work together, you’ll have access to my many hats, used thoughtfully, depending on what will be most useful to you.

How I Think About Productivity and Leadership

Choosing the right coach isn’t just about credentials or methodology. It’s about alignment: how a coach thinks, what they believe about people, and whether that approach fits you.

In this conversation with Kathy Vines, we talk about why productivity is a quality-of-life issue, why one size does not fit all, and how understanding the way people are wired helps us create the conditions for better work. We also explore leadership, realistic expectations, planning, self-compassion, and bringing more humanity to the workplace.

If you’re considering working with me, this episode will give you a very good sense of how I think, how I coach, and whether my approach feels right for you.

Coaching works best when you are ready to participate fully in the process. It can create clarity quickly, but lasting change comes from building awareness, trying new approaches, taking action, and integrating what you learn.

The Coachability Self-Test will help you consider whether you are ready for coaching.
